How to Stop 6 Pool Rush As Terran

We gave you a video guide on zerg 6 pool rush a couple days ago(check it here), and that is quite a good strategy. Now let’s play as the opponent to see how to stop it as terran.

ZvT Early Game Guide

Terrans are a strong race in Starcraft II. One of the factors is that a Terran player can expect to have an easy transition between his tech. Buildings can be adjusted or re-equipped to suit the needs of the player.

Zerg on the other hand don’t have this kind of luxury. Transitioning between builds is hard to do especially when you have to deal with the Terran wall in that is there to keep drones and zerglings out of the base. If you’re lucky you can get the early drone in the base to snoop the early builds, but most of the time you can expect to lose the drone to a marine.

It’s not like playing against Protoss where you can Micro a drone around and often avoid Zealots and probes while continuing to scout out the base. Playing against a competent Terran player often means sacrificing a drone, often for very little information in some games.

Your next option for scouting is often the overlord. But depending on where you have spawned often your overlord may not get to the opponents base in a time frame that gives you valuable information while still allowing you to adjust you build. And more then often you are forced out by marines and run the risk of losing your Overlord, which may result in Supply block.

So what can you do to gather valuable information in a short time frame?

If you can’t seem to get the type of scouting that will benefit your build then the next thing you can do is force the other player’s hand.

A very good option is to fast tech to Banelings. A Zerg player can pump out a decent amount of zergling in a very short time frame, and with the speed boost you can get to the other players base quickly. The reason for banelings is twofold.

First you’re getting rid of the wall, and if you economy is doing well, you can often fallow up your baneling bust with some zerglings. This can often bust a wall down and easily kill any marines and maybe some SCV’s depending on the strength of the other player’s army.

But secondly you are getting a chance to peak in the other player’s base. Make sure to take the effort to push the zerglings past defenders to get some scouting in before deciding on targets. If you can’t seem to break the wall, use it as a diversion to get an overlord in so you can at least see what it is he is doing.

Depending on what you saw, you can easily adjust your build.

Saw a bunch of barracks with a Reactor? Continue to push with Banelings and speedlings. Is he getting marauders and tanks to steel him against your Zergling/Baneling push? Make the jump to Mutalisks to punish him for not keeping a marine ball.

In ZvT, it’s very important that the Zerg player is the one dictating where the battle is going because you need that edge it gives you to adjust your build and grow. Don’t be afraid to try to Contain Terran players early. If you’re not trying to bust his wall and see what he is doing, then camp outside his wall and prevent him from attacking you.

Getting into a Terran base can be hard, but containing him is a bit easier on some maps, especially when forced to come through a choke. Just as zerglings need wide open spaces, Banelings need chokes to force bunch infantry groups in the early game. Keep this in mind and keep your zergling and baneling ball at the base of a ramp. This forces the Terran player to stay put or lose unit’s who drag ass on the ramp.

Just be mindful that the Terran player may try to make the first move in the form of a rush/cheese build. In those instances be on your toes, and keep an eye out around your base.

Don’t forget that Derwish has his Art of Cheese Series in the Strategy Section. There you can find common cheese builds and what you can do to counter them. Or pull them off for that matter.

So remember to be a little aggressive here and then because it can pay off. And don’t let the Terran wall in intimidate you into playing the waiting game, because it won’t help you in the long run.

10 Easy Ways To Imporve Your Skill

It is a brief of ways which can easily be used to improve your skills. A lot of these are very basic, but can be applied at all levels of play. This is more of a how you should be practicing and how to get better post.

10. Control Emotions

Don’t ever get too mad at the game. This can lead to being on tilt and playing poorly. Remain calm, learn from your mistakes and continue to focus on playing well.

9. Use hotkeys

A lot of players claim a certain hotkey setup is better than another. But in all honesty, use what works for you. If you like binding your hatcheries to 5-6-7 then do it. Just keep it consistent and make sure it makes sense to YOU. Also take the 2 seconds to learn the hotkeys for units and upgrades. Even though it takes 1 second to move a mouse, it takes even less hitting the keyboard.

8. Find a Practice Partner

Being able to consistently play someone without the pressures of losing in a ladder match can help calm and smooth out your game.

7. Watch Replays Of Yourself

Understanding why you won, or more importantly why you lose is a great tool. Athletes spend more time watching previous games studying how to improve then they do on the court applying their skills. Take this approach to your e-gaming also. And alway’s being asking yourself the “3 W’s.”

6. Practice builds consistently

If you want to practice a certain build vs a certain race, then do it. Obviously if you see a cheese or an obvious reason to change your strategy then do it. But the best way to practice your own build is to experiment using it vs a wide variety of opponent strategies.

5. Use the build order tester and unit tester.

http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/unit-tester/

http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/yabot/

Using tools like this allow you to learn without the annoyances of an enemy. Us these tools as a warmup before any long practice session.

4. Watch Replays of Others

Another great tool of players on the rise. You can see exactly how a players build fairs vs another. It also takes the edge off of learning and allows a more spectator friendly way to learn.

3. Research Forums/Articles

This is especially good for intermediate players and beginning players. Be well researched. This can also save time when trying to execute a certain style.

2. Practice

This should be an obvious one. But you can’t improve without hours of practice. Don’t over exert yourself and take breaks after longer games to reduce hand pains.

1. Follow the “3 W’s”

What? Where? Why? Asking yourself these 3 questions every time you have you Starcraft 2 screen up will make your understanding of the game skyrocket. Tune in for my next article for an in depth analysis of this system.

Terran Tactics

Here are some useful terran strategies and tactics, they are all collected from official starcraft 2 community. There must be something you can learn from.

1. The Reaper Rush : A tactic used by Terran players in the early game to harass their opponent, it is best used with 3+ Reapers with speed upgrade for best harassment. Often used to damage the opposing players economy by taking out their workers. This tactic has the potential to end games if the opposing player does not have or bring in defenses of any kind. Note: Remember to continue to build units while harassing and if you are scouted early be weary of using this tactic.

2. Wall In : The general placement of barracks/supply depot/and the occasional bunker depending on preference. They are used as a “wall” to slow down incoming opponents when they push an attack, it helps to stop workers from being attacked in the early game by things such as the 6 pool ling rush, and an early zealot push. So if you have been playing partypoker and have turned to Starcraft 2, you may need a bit of help to get going. This tactic is very effective with defenses behind the wall to defend it. Note: Bring an SCV or 2 over and repair the wall while it’s being attacked until your marines can kill the enemy.

3. Early Banshees : When the Terran player goes straight for cloaked banshees to harass the opponent. This is an effective tactic for players to take out the other players supply lines, and if the player is caught off guard has the potential to end games. Note: It is best to use a scan before sending banshees in so that you are able to position them in a place where things such as turrets and photon cannons can not reveal them and do damage to them.
