Dark Templar Rush

The Dark Templar rush is primarily a PvZ build that exploits Zerg’s lack of detection in the early to mid game, abusing the Dark Templar’s extreme damage output. While a rush, this build is not considered an “all in” build as it can transition fairly well into the mid to late game, and forces the Zerg player to invest in heavy detection. This build can also be used against Terran and Protoss opponents, although Scanner Sweep and Observers are much more problematic. The Dark Templar rush is very vulnerable to early pressure, and you may need to pump out Zealots anytime during the build for defense (Sentries and Stalkers are not recommended because of their gas cost).

18 Assimilator

You should be able to get 3 Dark Templars out at around 5:00 (~7:00 ingame time). At this point, Dark Templars should be quickly moved to the opponent’s mineral line. Once there, they should proceed to attack enemy workers. Against Terran and Protoss opponents, it may be beneficial to have one Dark Templar attack a spot away from the mineral line, to force the opponent to use Scanner Sweep or send over their Observer. This will help protect your Dark Templars near the mineral line.

Smart opponents who lack detection will usually counter attack your base immediately once the Dark Templar attack begins. If this happens, you must use your best judgment to proceed. If you think you can destroy your enemy’s base before he destroys yours, do so. Most often that not though, you will want to pull back some of your Dark Templars to help defend. Again, the amount you will want to pull back is up to your discretion, although generally taking 2 back to defend and leaving 1 to harass is the best way to go.

Tips:

  • While applying pressure with your Dark Templars, make sure to keep building Warpgates, expand, etc.
  • Transitioning to High Templars for mid to late game works well with this build.
  • Even when your opponent gets detection, occasionally sending Dark Templars to harass is a great way to slow down an opponent’s macro, cause fear and frustration, and have them over invest in detection.

Almost all build orders are a rough estimation and can usually be adapted depending on your enemy’s actions. ALWAYS scout your opponent and adjust your build accordingly.

How To Defend Void Ray Rush

As all Terran players can tell you, getting rushed with Void Rays in TvP can be extremely irritating, and leads many players to believe that Void Rays are simply overpowered. While they are extremely efficient, Void Rays are defeatable and there are a plenty of things you can do in StarCraft 2 to protect yourself from them.

Scouting

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from Void Rays, and to protect yourself from ANYTHING in the game, is to SCOUT. Many players, especially new ones to StarCraft 2 or RTS games in general, simply will not scout, or scout too late. You need to be in your opponents base fairly early in order to see what he is doing, especially if he’s going for a rush. There are several things you can look for to help determine if your opponent is going Void Rays:

  1. Early Gas: Void Rays cost a lot of gas, and most Protoss builds dictate an Assimilator at around 13 or 14 supply. If your opponent is warping an Assimilator in before then, this is a huge warning that the player will be teching very quickly, and very likely to Void Rays. If you want, you can even build a Refinery with your scouting SCV on his second gas to slow down his gas collection!
  2. Pylon / Gateway / Cybernetic Core Wall Off: If your opponent has completely blocked off his choke with any of these buildings, it’s because he doesn’t want you to see something. And more often than not, it’s a Stargate.
  3. Only Zealots: If for some reason you can’t scout your opponent (or if you’ve been chased out his base), and you see him with a group of Zealots without Stalkers and Sentries, your opponent is saving gas for something. Most Immortal push builds will not produce only Zealots and this is a huge sign that your opponent is going for Void Rays.
  4. Certain Maps: You are much more likely to see Void Ray rushes on maps with short air distance between bases such as Desert Oasis and Scrap Station.

Defense

Scouting is only half the battle though; once you have determined your opponent is rushing Void Rays you still need to do something about it.

Apply Pressure

One of the best things a Terran player can do if they know their opponent is teching to Void Rays is to apply pressure. The reason for this is quite logical: if the Protoss player is teching extremely quickly and saving resources (especially gas), he will not have many units to defend himself with. You have a window of opportunity to attack him when he’s vulnerable giving YOU the advantage; when that window passes and your opponent is creating Void Rays, you will lose that advantage.

This pressure will come from Marines, Marauders, and Hellions, depending on your build. If you were planning on going a 2 or 3 Barracks build, you will only be using Marines and Marauders. Marines have a higher DPS and are mathematically more efficient than Marauders in this type of attack and should make up the majority of your force. If the Void Ray gets out, Marines are also your only unit at this point to stop them. However, mixing in around 2-3 Marauders with their Concussive Shells upgrade will be extremely useful in order to deal with Zealots (the only unit he will probably have). If you were going a quick mech build, you will want to produce a few Hellions (also excellent at kiting Zealots).

Timing the pressure attack can be slightly difficult. You will want to have the largest force possible attacking his base right before he gets his Void Ray out. You will want to continously scan the Protoss player with your Orbital Command energy in order to know the right time to attack.

Spotting

If you don’t think applying pressure will work, or would like to play more defensively, you will need to gain as much vision of the map as possible. If the Protoss player attacks when you are out of place, the results can be catastrophic. The main reason for this is that Void Rays need a target to charge their beam on in order to do their maximum damage; if they find a solitary building at the edge of your base to attack, they will be able to charge to full damage even before you can attack them. If your units are in position to deal with Void Rays, their threat is reduced significantly. There are several things you can do to spot the Void Rays before they reach your base:

  1. Surround: Position a few Marines around your opponents base. As he moves his Void Rays out you may be able to spot their direction.
  2. Xel’Naga Watch Towers: Self explanatory. Get a unit on each!
  3. Intuition: There will be times when you may think Void Rays are nearby. Follow your gut and scan to check!

Combat

You have several options when dealing with Void Rays. One of the best ways is to mass Marines and upgrading Stim Packs. When engaging Void Rays with your Marines, you will want to Stim and focus fire each Void Ray down individually. If you have a large group of Marines, make sure to move the group closer to or even under the Void Rays in order to make sure all Marines are within attack range. If you scout the rush and are constantly building Marines, you should have no trouble taking out the Void Rays.

Turrets can help, but be careful about how many you make and where you position them. Void Rays can rip through Turrets very quickly if they are fully charged. Placing 2-3 around your mineral line is your best bet.

It is possible to tech to either Ghosts (for EMP) or Vikings, both of which will help tremendously. If you have gone a 3 Barracks / Ghost Academy build, your Marines and a nicely placed EMP should demolish any Void Rays. If you were building Tech, Vikings do extra damage against Armored units such as Void Rays and can kite them very well with their insane range; they should be produced immediately (do not risk getting a Reactor). Ghost and Viking timings against Void Rays can be tight though, and practice may be needed.

Protoss Warpgate Rush

The 4 Warpgate Rush is an extremely popular StarCraft 2 build for Protoss players that focuses on putting heavy pressure on the opponent, and keeping it on by constantly warping in units at a proxy Pylon. While it is technically possible to transition out of this rush, it is considered “semi-all in” as you must either do significant economical damage to your opponent or flat out win within several minutes of your initial push. There are many variations of this build, although the standard outline is as follows:

9 Pylon
12 Gateway (Scout with Probe)
14 Assimilator
16 Pylon
18 Cybernetics Core
19 Zealot
23 Pylon
24 Stalker
25 Research Warpgate Technology
27 Gateway
28 Sentry
30 Gateway
30 Gateway
31 Proxy Pylon

The build is fairly straightforward from this point on. Once your Warpgate research has completed, you will want to continuously warp in units at your proxy pylon outside of the enemy’s base (your unit composition should be based around whatever you scout your enemy making). Move your army into the enemy’s natural expansion. If you find his army at his expansion and have the superior force, Forcefield his ramp with your Sentry to block off reinforcements and engage. If you don’t find his army at the expansion, send a unit or two up his ramp to check the size of his force. If you don’t think you can win the fight, continue to warp in units until you feel safe to engage.

On some occasions, you may find that your opponent has scouted your 4 Warpgate Rush and  invested in a substantial amount of static defense such as Bunkers, Spine Crawlers, or Photon Cannons. In this situation, it’s best to abort the rush and immediately expand to catch up in economy unless you’re sure you break through.

Tips:

  • Feel free to use your Chrono Boost however you see fit, but make sure to save 50 energy to Boost your Warpgate Research twice.
  • If possible, do not let your opponent scout your third and fourth gateway: place them after you’ve killed their scout, hide them in a corner of your base, etc.
  • As a general reference, Gateways placed when WarpGate Research is at 50% completion will complete at around the same.
  • It’s generally a good idea to place a second proxy Pylon at a different location just in case one is scouted and destroyed.

Almost all build orders are a rough estimation and can usually be adapted depending on your enemy’s actions. ALWAYS scout your opponent and adjust your build accordingly.

That’s All: Starcraft 2 Cheat Codes

You’ve already discovered some of the cheat codes hidden within StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, but you haven’t found them all. It was time to lift the veil and reveal all of the official codes available in the single-player mode.

Cheat codes can only be used in single-player mode by pressing the enter key within the game and typing in the codes as shown below within the console.

Caution: Before using cheat codes it’s important to understand that using them will prevent additional achievement gains you might have earned through normal play until either a new campaign is started or a prior save is loaded (one from before the use of the first cheat).

*Unlike other cheat codes, using the Easter Egg Cheat Code, “OverEngineeredCodPiece” will not prevent achievement earning.

Please note: All of these cheat codes have been added deliberately to the game and unlike third-party hacks or cheats won’t flag an account for suspension.

How to watch starcraft 2 replay?

Once you download starcraft 2 replays, save them to your StarCraft 2 replay folder which can be found in your “My Documents” folder, or just “Documents” for Vista and Windows 7 users.

The Secrets of Masters

BlizzCon is now live, StarCraft II Game Director Dustin Browder, Battle.net Project Director Greg Canessa, Game Balance Designer David Kim, and Associate Game Balance Designer Matt Cooper took to the Development Stage on the first day of BlizzCon to share unique insights and expertise with newer players seeking to improve their StarCraft II gameplay during the Secrets of the Masters panel early Friday afternoon.

Let’s see the secrets of the masters.

Leagues & Ladders

One of the most basic elements of competitive StarCraft II gameplay is the league and ladder system, since it determines how you are ranked and what kind of opponents you’re likely to face. The Battle.net matchmaker is an adaptive system, which means that the more a player plays, the better the system gets to ‘know’ his or her skill level, with the ultimate goal being for each player to be paired with opponents of equal skill so they win around half of their games. The matchmaker tracks wins and losses and creates a hidden skill rating for a player over time (which is actually a rolling average composed of several different numbers). It can’t see how you won a match, so it doesn’t know if you won with a cannon rush, or as the result of a lengthy, well-executed strategy. How much your rating changes after a win or loss is determined by how your skill rating stacked up against your opponent prior to the start of the match. On that note, a given player’s skill rating is tracked separately for 1v1 and team games, but is not tracked separately by race. While a player’s skill rating changes over time, it remains intact from season to season, even if other stats are wiped. A player is initially assigned to a ladder and a division of 100 players based on the results of the placement matches played when first venturing into multiplayer, and that assignment will change over time based on overall performance. Wins and losses will change a player’s hidden skill rating as well as a visible public rating, and it is that visible rating number (not the raw win-loss record) which determines their position within the division. The goal, of course, is to ascend to the top of your division and graduate to higher leagues as you become a better player. There are 5 leagues (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond), and all StarCraft II players in a region are split into these leagues by 20% increments. So, Diamond league players represent the top 20% of players in their region.

Just as units are constantly being monitored and adjusted for balance, the leagues and ladders system has also been steadily tweaked and improved since StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty launched, and that process will continue. Several adjustments have been made over time to improve the quality and speed of 1v1 matchmaking, as well as to improve matchmaking in team games. Players who perform exceptionally well can expect to see promotions to higher leagues more quickly. Meanwhile, other adjustments are being made to improve the ladder experience for players just getting into competitive gameplay.

There are also some pretty exciting changes coming to Battle.net in the future that have been based on our players’ feedback and our own research. Season 2 is coming, and it will bring with it a ladder wipe, but at the same time, each player’s profile will be upgraded with new UI elements, including awesome new artwork which denotes a player’s rank within their division, as well as a record of performance in prior seasons, improved detail pages that are more colorful and rewarding for top players, featured replays, and many more. Matchmaking rating will be preserved, so a single placement match will be all that it takes to find your place on the ladder once again. On top of all these new features, two new leagues will be introduced to highlight the top players in each region: the Master League, which places roughly the top 5% of Diamond players in their own league, and the Grandmaster League, a very special, elite league which is comprised of the top 200 players in each gameplay region, which will be visible to other players

Improve Your Game

Many players seem to believe that in-born talent is the primary factor regarding whether a player has the potential to go pro in StarCraft II — that either you’ve got the nerves that let you get to 300 APM (actions per minute) or you don’t. While talent does play a role, no one emerges from the womb ready to own face at StarCraft II. The truth of the matter is that pro players work, and they work hard to become the best of the best. Most pros play 12+ hours a day, both on the ladder as well as in custom game scrimmages against teammates and associates. Pros also spend a lot of time studying the game when they aren’t playing. They analyze their own replays, as well as the replays from other professionals from league games, custom games, and tournaments to formulate strategies, identify weaknesses, and find ways to improve. Most pros also focus their efforts intently on playing a single race, getting to know it inside and out, upside down and backwards, so play always feels second nature. The most important thing to keep in mind is that, even if you aren’t a great StarCraft II player now, you can become a great StarCraft II player with practice, study, and commitment. A few pros lent their insights to panel attendees via quotes, and they reflect the kind of attitude that it takes to be a champion:

“Don’t stress over losses. Use them to learn your faults. No pain no gain.” – Select

“First of all be a fan of the game and enjoy it, then make sure to be 100% committed or you will fail, and last watch day9!” – Huk

“If you’re not attacking you’re probably losing” – QXC

“Practice a hell of a lot, watch replays of the top players and check out their strategies, and in most cases copy them :) . After that refining your play mainly consists of watching your own games — and ironing out the faults.” -Demuslim

The panelists took some time to share insights on each of these points. Keep your head in the game — wins and losses don’t matter as long as you’re learning; after all, the matchmaker is working at its best if you’re losing half of your games to equally skilled opponents. Psychology is a huge factor in StarCraft II, and if you let yourself get psyched out by a loss, it can cost you games. If you enjoy StarCraft II, then you’ll be dedicated to playing, and having fun is vital! Getting better at the game means putting on your thinking cap; don’t discount what you can learn from members of the StarCraft II community, such as day9 and others, who provide commentary for the game and take the time to deeply analyze StarCraft II’s mechanics and game theory. The insights these members of the community have can go a long way toward you take your game to a new level. Stay aggressive — it’s easy to develop tunnel vision and lose track of what your opponent is doing. Don’t get complacent in your own little world, stay on top of them, harass them, and don’t let them get into a groove. Sometimes defense is the right way to go, but if you can force your opponent to react to you, and keep reacting, then you’ve taken control of the game. Finally, find strategies that work, but it’s important to keep reaching — winning is good, but reaching new plateaus as a player is better, and hopefully, more satisfying. View full article »

Zile’s Zerg Guide

To start; Zerg strengths and weaknesses:

Weaknesses:

-Low HP units with hard counters

-Vulnerable to early rushes

-Slow early game

-Micro intensive

-Must outnumber (usually 2 or 3 to 1) to win fights effectively

Strengths:

-Hatcheries can produce ANY UNIT you have tech for on a LARGE scale

-Many varied ways to stage a multi-directional attack

-High damage potential

-Massive map scouting ability

-Fast skirmishers available mid game with high destructive potential

-Most economic potential out of any race

Many of the complaints I read here on the forums seem to stem from frustration at a lack of staying power for Zerg units and an inability to “rush” at higher levels of play. One is related to the other. Protoss and Terran’s abilities to “wall” their choke with high hp units that their ranged units can safely shoot from behind make a rush with low hp melee units tantamount to suicide on a large scale. This leaves Zerg with the heavy burden of establishing (and keeping) map control.
How do we do it? Like this:

A: Scout!

-Terrans, and to a lesser extent the Protoss do not typically send lone military units out to scout for a fear of getting surrounded and killed (and thus getting behind financially). Zealots and marines cost no less than at least twice that of a zergling and have the same sight radius. They also move slower. Once you have upgraded ling speed (which should be either the first or the second upgrade you take) you have access to the fastest, cheapest unit in the game, able to outrun even a Hellion. Also take in consideration:

1) Overlords are something you have to build anyway and have a crazy sight radius. They move dreadfully slow initially but on many of the smaller “2 man” maps it doesn’t really matter. Parking them on high ground points allows them to effectively watch for early expansions, keep an eye on unit mass and/or movement and other things. Later on they can transport units or become Overseers with two helpful (in a subtle way) abilities that assist in gathering information on what your opponent is building and (later) to delay what they are building while you mount an offensive.

2) Creep (which you will learn to love) gives sight radius. Or at least the tumors that you create do. Tumors are created by Queens, of which you should have at least 2. Creep tumors are stealthed unless they are actively spawning another tumor or being spawned. You should try as hard as you can to creep the way toward your opponent’s base or at least provide yourself with a suitable radius so you can spot that oh-so deadly MMT drop. It also gives increased unit speed, usually between 20-50% (it varies per unit); but in the case of the queen, by a whopping 150%.

B: Economy first.

-Do not, do not do not do not (do not) build units unless the situation warrants it. If you expect an offensive (you will know what to look for if you’re reading this guide) you should make enough units to either 1) contain him in his base 2) counter what he’s making or 3) destroy his economic potential and then go back to building your economy. The most popular strategies for races other than Zerg involve staying behind a wall of safety until enough units have been massed (i.e. their mineral line is almost empty) to mount a game-ending offensive. Not only can you have double the economy of your opponent, (and thus double the units) but you can do it (some of the time) safely and easily because he is going to let you. Some subpoints:

1) The max amount of drones you can have before you gain zero benefit (given your hatchery is ideally placed) is 3 per mineral node and 3 per gas node. For your average 8m/2g resource point, this means 30 drones. Going from 2 drones/mineral to 3 drones/mineral gives LESS benefit than going from 1 to 2. Going from 1 to 2 gives less benefit (slightly) than going from 0 to 1. Two bases with 15 drones each will harvest more minerals than 1 base with 30.

2) Always replace your drones. You will go through 1 drone for every building you make (usually this is a lot) so always have drones building if your patches are looking less than crowded.

3) Never run out of supply. Every 7 seconds that you have minerals and don’t have supply is a wasted larvae (more on larvae next). Later in the game this means you need to keep a supply “buffer” of between 8 to 16 units, especially if you’re massing creatures that use 2 supply.

C: Manage your hidden resource.

-Your “hidden” resource is larvae. Every larvae that is spawned will eventually (if you’re not lazy) become a military unit, a worker, or even a building (via being a drone first). You need to maximize larvae potential if you hope to field an effective economy and army. You do this by:

Zerg vs Zerg Strategy Guide

Thanks to ZerkerZerg from battle.net for giving us great ZvZ strategy. Let’s get started.

The basis of ZvZ is micro skill, timing and knowing when you can cut army for drones. Going fast expand in ZvZ unless your opponent isn’t going for fast agression is SUICIDE. I punish people who go fast expand against me all the time. I had one game where I killed this guy’s expansion 3 times while mine was running and untouchable as he couldn’t cross the map.

Scouting and timing is VERY important. Parking your overlords at key locations to watch for enemy army movements is your key to victory.

Build orders are between 10 pool to 13 pool, really depends on how fast you want it and gas usually at the same time for fast zergling speed. Starting zergling speed and the next 50 gas to baneling nest usually makes them finish at the same time. You should get BOTH before you move into killing your opponent.

There are a few different possibilities for ZvZ:

Openers:
-Zergling/baneling
-Roaches
-Zerglings

Midgame:
-Mutalisks
-Roaches
-Hydralisks

End Game:
-Ultralisks
-Mutalisks
-Baneling
-Speedling
-Roaches

Yes I know people are going to scream WTF ROACHES ALL GAME LONG! THAT’S STUPID! Roaches are pretty good all game long if you upgrade them they can 1v1 a hydralisk and win pretty well. View full article »

Fix More Starcraft 2 Errors

1. Online and Vs. AI Game Graphic Error
Campaign and Tutorial runs alright, but Online game and vs AI is bad. You will see only black background, minimum and top button. It may be associated to a specific version of Windows, reportedly Czech because of the exotic letters used in that language. It can happen with other languages of use similar fonts.
Anyway it is caused by the name of Application Data which in Czech is “Data aplikací” and the í calls trouble. So a fix is to reinstall your native version of Windows or install the US version of Windows and the issue will be resolved.
Alternatively you can edit registry to get rid of this.
Go to “Run” from Start menu and type “regedit”. After that navigate your way into ”

This ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders”

and there under “Common AppData” change the path to something more suitable (in this example Data aplikací -> Data aplikaci).

2. StarCraft 2 Random Multiplayer Disconnects
You may get disconnected from online games like after 5-10 minutes into the game, it can get frustrating if this hinders your campaign as well. No rock solid fix right now but you can portforward your router.
TCP 1119 and 1120 need to be open for battle.net servers. If it still doesn’t work, read through this guide for PC and Mac for all the possible workarounds you can do to get your game working.

3. StarCraft 2 Singleplayer Tutorial Error
If you start the tutorial of the game it returns the error ” You have no access to singleplayer mode and you need to purchase the full version. There are two things that you need to make sure first. You system clock is set to current date and time. Secondly if you are on Vista/Win 7, you are running the game as admin. Doing that will resolve this issue.

4. StarCraft 2 Language Change
If you have mistakenly download or bought the game in language other then your native, you need to redownload the game again as currently there is no other way.

5. StarCraft 2 Random Freezes
For some, StarCraft 2 freezes after few minutes, screen goes black, game tabs out on desktop and after few seconds, tabs back in and unfreezes. No solution, only thing you can do if it bugs you alot is try playing the game in Windowed mode.

6. StarCraft 2 Dysinc in Multiplayer
StarCraft 2 is facing connection issues, you can try the two links posted above for PC and Mac to resolve all the connection hurdles. Meanwhile in this case update your hardware drivers, restart your router, and relaunch the game, it will most probably work.

7. StarCraft 2 Achievements not Loading, Game Crashes
Weird, few folks are reportedly unable to load the achievements and game crashes with this error. Make sure you have your ports opened which are TCP 1119, 1120 and wait for the patch. Also make you are connecting to internet when you play StarCraft 2, it may resolve this issue.

8. How to Improve StarCraft 2 Performance on Mac OS
Sad for Mac guys as they are experiencing some horrible performance issues with StarCraft 2 even on the high end specs. There are few things you can try to enhance the StarCraft 2 performance on Mac OS.

Workaround 1.
Download the Mac OS X 10.6.4 combo updater, which is 887MB but will you troubleshooting. Quit all open applications and run the installer.

Workaround 2. only if Workaround 1 Fails
Boot your Mac in Safe Mode then simply restart normally is enough to resolve number of issues after the recent Mac OS update by Apple. It will clear potentially problematic cache and may resolve your issues.

To boot in Safe Mode, hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. After booting in Safe Mode, simply restart normally and check if this has any significant effect.

Workaround 3. Only if Workaround1 and 2 Fail

Downgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.3. Although this option eliminates important security fixes included in Mac OS X 10.6.4, along with any other enhancements, it may be the only option.
